Keep the three o'clock cup
The afternoon cup is usually the first one people give up, and it is rarely because they stopped wanting it. It is the pause more than the drink — something warm, five minutes that are not work. Brewed cacao keeps that intact: dark, unsweetened and adult, on a fraction of the stimulant load that makes a three o'clock coffee follow you home.
Naturally caffeinated. The honest detail sits in the questions below.
Why the afternoon is the one worth protecting
You want the break more than the jolt
By three o'clock the cup is mostly punctuation — warmth, a pause, a walk to the kettle. Cacao gives you all of that at a fraction of the stimulant load, so the ritual survives the part of the day it usually gets cut from.
It stays dark rather than turning into a treat
The usual afternoon alternatives are sweet, and sweet at three has its own cost. This is dark and a little roasty with nothing added, which is why it holds the place coffee held instead of feeling like a consolation.
Easy at a desk
Our single-serve cups are compatible with Keurig® brewers, so a pod machine in a break room handles it with nothing extra to carry. We worked out how to roast for a single cup when nobody else in the category could, which is why the pod version tastes like the press version.
“I add a scoop to my French press with my coffee in the morning for the BEST mocha. In the afternoon I have a cup straight for a treat and a pick me up.”

Will it keep me up?
Cacao’s main stimulant is not caffeine. It is theobromine, a slower relative of it — cocoa solids carry roughly ten times more theobromine than caffeine, and theobromine stays in the body about twice as long. Coffee is the other way round. That is a different compound on a different clock, which is why people describe the two cups differently. The most common thing customers tell us is that they can have one in the afternoon. How it sits with you is individual, and the reviews below are people describing their own experience rather than a finding.
Can I drink it after dinner?
Plenty of people do — it is the most common reason customers give for switching. Cacao’s main stimulant is theobromine rather than caffeine, and it carries about 20 mg of caffeine in an 8 oz cup by our own measurement, against about 96 mg in the same size cup of coffee on USDA figures.
Is it sweet?
No. There is no sugar in it at all. Dark and a little roasty, closer to strong black coffee than to anything from a tin.
Can I make it at the office?
Yes - the single-serve cups are compatible with Keurig® brewers, so a pod machine in a break room handles it with no extra equipment.
Which roast for the afternoon?
Whichever you like, though people who want something gentler later in the day tend toward the Medium roasts. The Dark and French roasts are bolder.
