For anyone cutting back

Keep the morning. Cut the caffeine.

Cutting back is rarely about willpower. It is about the cup — the pause before the day starts, the warm thing in your hand, the taste you actually look forward to. Give that up at the same time as the caffeine and you are cutting two things at once. This is a way to only cut one.

Keep the morning. Cut the caffeine.

What you keep, and what changes

The morning stays exactly as it is

Same press, same grinder, same mug, same two scoops and hot water. It is dark, it is a little bitter, and it is not sweet — so it holds the place coffee held rather than replacing it with something that feels like a consolation.

The lift arrives rather than hits

Cacao carries theobromine, a gentler relative of caffeine. It comes on over several minutes and fades the same way, which is the part people notice first: an afternoon cup that does not still be with you at eleven.

And here is how to count it

There is caffeine in cacao — about 20 mg in an 8 oz cup, against about 96 mg in the same size cup of coffee on USDA figures. So it is not a way to reach zero. What it does give you is a number you can actually put in a daily total, which is more than a cup of coffee will ever tell you. If you are cutting caffeine on medical advice, take that number to whoever is guiding you.

And you cannot know which one you just drank. The same drink from the same shop swung more than twofold across a single week.

A number that holds, because we roast to a profile rather than to a timer.
Coffee figure: USDA FoodData Central, 96 mg per 8 fl oz (145 mg per 12 fl oz). The FDA’s own figure for a 12 fl oz cup is a range, 113–247 mg. Variability: McCusker, Goldberger & Cone, J Anal Toxicol 2003;27(7):520–522. Choffy figure is our own measurement, 2.4–2.6 mg per fluid ounce, not an independent laboratory assay.

“I love Choffy. It is my go-to every afternoon. After trying different varieties, I like Volta and Ivory Coast best. I can no longer drink coffee, and Choffy has filled that void.”

Questions

Cutting back, honestly

How much caffeine is actually in it?

Around 20 mg in an 8 oz cup — our own measurement, 2.4 to 2.6 mg per fluid ounce. On USDA figures an 8 oz cup of coffee is about 96 mg, a 12 oz cup about 145, and six ounces of espresso would be 384. Count it like anything else.

Will it help with withdrawal?

We are not going to promise that, and anyone who does is guessing. What we can tell you is that it contains some caffeine rather than none, and that it keeps the ritual — which for most people is the harder half.

Can I use it to taper gradually?

Plenty of people do, usually by alternating rather than switching overnight. If a clinician is guiding your taper, show them the number above so it goes into your daily total properly.

Does it really taste like coffee?

Closer to coffee than to anything sweet — dark, roasty, with a deeper cacao note underneath. Our French roasts are the most coffee-like of the three. Most people drink it black.

What is theobromine?

A mild stimulant that occurs naturally in cacao, chemically related to caffeine but slower. That is a fact about the bean rather than a promise about how you will feel.
