100% roasted cacao · brewed like coffee

The coffee routine, with cacao in the cup

Same press, same grinder, same mug, same two scoops. People call it cacao coffee because that is exactly what the morning feels like — you brew it the way you brew coffee and you drink it the way you drink coffee. The bean is different, and that is the only part that changes.

The coffee routine, with cacao in the cup

Why the coffee comparison sticks

The morning does not change

Coarse grounds, water just off the boil, steep and pour. If you own a French press you are already set up. People who take it black keep taking it black; people who take milk and sugar keep doing that too.

It drinks dark rather than sweet

You are drinking an extraction with the grounds left behind, so it pours with body and a clean finish. Our French roasts land closest to a strong black coffee, which is why they are where most switchers start.

The lift arrives instead of hitting

Cacao carries theobromine, a gentler relative of caffeine. It comes on over several minutes and tapers the same way, on a good deal less caffeine than the cup it is replacing — the part regular coffee drinkers tend to notice first.

coffee beans in the bag
Roasted cacao is the only thing in it. The coffee part of the name is about the method, and the method is identical.
2
scoops per cup, same as your coffee
Cacao is less dense than coffee, so most people go slightly heavier once they have found their strength. Everything else about the routine stays put.

Questions

About cacao coffee

Is there any coffee in it?

None. It is 100% roasted cacao. Nothing is added and nothing is taken out - no coffee, no sugar, no dairy, no flavouring.

Is cacao coffee the same as mushroom coffee or chicory?

No. Those blend other ingredients with or instead of coffee. This is a single ingredient - cacao beans, roasted and ground - and it is the only thing in the bag.

Does it taste sweet?

No. Unsweetened cacao is dark and a little roasty, closer to a strong black coffee than to anything sweet. Sweeten it if you like; most people are surprised they do not need to.

Will it keep me awake?

Cacao’s main stimulant is not caffeine. It is theobromine, a slower relative of it — cocoa solids carry roughly ten times more theobromine than caffeine, and theobromine stays in the body about twice as long. Coffee is the other way round. That is a different compound on a different clock, which is why people describe the two cups differently. By our own measurement an 8 oz cup carries about 20 mg of caffeine; the same size cup of coffee is about 96 mg on USDA figures.

Do I need a special machine?

No. A French press, a drip machine or a pour-over all work. If you would rather not measure anything, the single-serve cups are compatible with Keurig® brewers.

“The dark roast is great if you enjoy the dark, almost burned flavor. The flavor is rich and full and it is very easy to modify the taste with creamers and sweeteners.”

“Although I enjoy Choffy as a great substitute/replacement for my morning coffee, I like it best when blended with my regular coffee. I like coffee very strong and dark, and Volta French Roast Choffy just enhances the richness.”

“Delicious! I love Choffy! My only complaint is that I feel like I need to double the amount of grounds for a single serving or else it's watery.”
