Still Love Your Coffee Shop Ritual? Keep It — Cut Most of the Caffeine
For People Who Like Coffee
You Don't Have to Give Up the Ritual. Just the Jitters.
Most advice about quitting coffee assumes you want to stop drinking it. Usually the goal is narrower: stopping what the caffeine does to you. The warm mug and the five minutes before the day starts don't have to change. Only what's in the cup.

How the Common Coffee Substitutes Compare
If you've tried to quit before, you've probably already been handed the standard list. Most of those swaps replace the caffeine and break the ritual at the same time.
- TeaA different ceremony. You steep it rather than brew it, it's thinner in the mouth, and black tea is still a caffeinated drink. If you liked coffee for its body and its roasted bitterness, tea isn't offering either.
- MatchaStill caffeine. It's often described as a smoother delivery, but you haven't removed the compound you were trying to get away from, and whisking a powder is nothing like brewing a pot.
- DecafKeeps the ritual, so it's the most common first stop. But decaf is not caffeine-free, and many drinkers find the decaffeination process flattens the flavor they were staying for.
- Mushroom blendsMany of the popular ones are part coffee. Read the label before assuming you've switched.
- Chicory and dandelionThe closest of the traditional options: roasted, brewed and bitter, the way coffee is. Whether the flavor lands is personal, and there's no cacao in it.
Choffy is roasted cacao beans, ground and brewed in the equipment you already own. It looks like coffee in the cup, it pours like coffee, and it's bitter-sweet rather than sweet. It is not hot chocolate. It also isn't caffeine-free. It has substantially less caffeine than brewed coffee, but not none, and the figures and their sources are published on our coffee alternative page.
How Long Caffeine Withdrawal Lasts
Most switching advice skips this, and it's the reason a lot of attempts fail on day two. Caffeine withdrawal is a recognized clinical syndrome with a fairly predictable shape.
According to the StatPearls clinical reference published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, symptoms typically begin within 12 to 24 hours of cutting back, peak somewhere between 20 and 51 hours, and can persist for 2 to 9 days.1 Headache is the most common complaint, usually alongside fatigue, low mood, and difficulty concentrating.
Those numbers are finite. The worst of it lands on roughly day two, not day ten. The same reference notes that gradual dose tapering is a standard way to manage it, rather than stopping all at once.1
A Four-Week Taper
Because Choffy has some caffeine rather than none, it works as a step down instead of a cliff. A taper most people can finish looks like this:
- Week one: replace the afternoon cup.Leave your morning coffee exactly as it is. The afternoon cup is the one most likely to be interfering with your sleep anyway, and it's the easiest one to give up without a fight.
- Week two: split the morning.Half a mug of coffee, half a mug of Choffy, or one of each. You're lowering the dose while keeping the routine identical.
- Week three: flip the morning.Choffy first thing, coffee later if you want it. Most people notice the afternoon feels different before they notice the morning does.
- Week four: keep whatever you want.Plenty of people land on Choffy every day and a real coffee on Saturdays. There's no prize for purity.
If you're managing a health condition or you're pregnant, talk to your doctor about caffeine rather than a website.
Your Usual Coffee Order, Translated
Choffy brews in a French press, a drip machine, a Keurig, an Aeropress, or a tea infuser, using the same gear and roughly the same ratios. Whatever you order now has a version here.
| Your Coffee Order | Your Choffy Order |
|---|---|
| Black coffee, medium roast | Choffy medium roast, brewed black |
| Bold / dark roast | Choffy dark roast |
| French roast, extra bold | Choffy French roast, the most coffee-like of the three |
| Latte or cappuccino | Choffy brewed strong, steamed milk on top |
| Iced coffee | Choffy brewed hot, cooled, then poured over ice |
| Afternoon "just because" cup | Choffy, easier on the rest of your afternoon |
Lattes, iced and flavored versions are all on our recipes page, and the full method-by-method instructions are in our brewing guide.
Why Regulars Make the Switch
Same Ritual
Brewed hot, sipped slow, first thing in the morning. The habit doesn't change, just the ingredient.
Lighter Cutoff Rule
There's a lot less "not after 2pm" math to do with Choffy. Know your own tolerance.
Still Bitter-Sweet, Roasted
Choffy is roasted and brewed like coffee, not a powder and not a tea. It looks, smells, and pours like the drink you already love.

Questions People Ask Before Switching
What can I drink instead of coffee that still tastes like coffee?
Roasted, brewed drinks are the only category that gets close, because the flavor you're attached to comes from roasting rather than from the coffee bean specifically. Brewed cacao, chicory and roasted grain drinks all share that roasted bitterness. Of those, brewed cacao is the one you make in your existing coffee equipment with a normal grind and a normal brew time, so the switch tends to hold.
Is Choffy caffeine-free?
No. Choffy contains substantially less caffeine than brewed coffee, but not zero. Its dominant natural compound is theobromine, a chemical relative of caffeine found in cacao. The published figures, the sources behind them, and the side-by-side comparison with coffee are all on our coffee alternative page.
How long does caffeine withdrawal last?
Symptoms usually start 12 to 24 hours after you cut back, peak between 20 and 51 hours, and can last anywhere from 2 to 9 days.1 Tapering gradually rather than stopping outright is the standard way to blunt it, and that's the approach laid out above.
Will I still get a lift in the morning?
Be realistic here. In controlled head-to-head trials, caffeine produced the measurable increase in alertness and theobromine did not.2 If you're switching expecting an identical jolt, you'll be disappointed. If you're switching because the jitters, the afternoon crash, or the effect on your sleep were the problem, that's the trade you're making.
Can I brew it in my regular coffee maker?
Yes. French press, drip machine, single-serve cups, Aeropress and a simple tea infuser all work, and no new equipment is required. Grind and ratio guidance for each method is in our brewing guide.
Does it taste like hot chocolate?
No. Hot chocolate is sweetened cocoa powder suspended in milk. Choffy is roasted cacao brewed and strained like coffee, so it's a clear, bitter-sweet, full-bodied cup with no added sugar. If you drink your coffee black, drink your first Choffy black.
Which roast should I start with?
Match your coffee order. Medium-roast coffee drinkers usually start with medium; dark and bold drinkers do better with dark. If you drink French roast or you want the most coffee-like cup of the three, start with French. If you can't decide, a sampler set lets you try them side by side before committing to a full bag.
Can I drink it in the evening?
Many people do, and it's one of the more common reasons regulars make the switch: the "nothing after 2pm" rule gets a lot less strict. It isn't caffeine-free though, so give it a week and pay attention to your own sleep before you assume a 9pm cup is fine.
